Abu Dhabi National Takaful Review (2026): The A- Rated Benchmark Nobody Else Matches

In a UAE takaful sector where the recent history includes a suspended licence (YAS), a dissolved board (Methaq), a near-failure (Takaful Emarat) and a solvency breach at the industry pioneer (Salama), Abu Dhabi National Takaful has spent the same years doing something radical: being consistently fine. A.M. Best has affirmed its A- (Excellent) rating for ten consecutive years, most recently in December 2025. Fitch has affirmed A- for four, most recently February 2026. No licensed UAE takaful peer matches either streak, let alone both. The company crossed AED 1 billion in revenue, announced in April 2026, serves 500,000+ customers, and has operated since November 2003 without a regulatory incident.

Why the ratings matter more here than elsewhere

An insurance policy is a promise to pay later. In takaful, the pool pays claims, but the operator's strength determines whether the machinery around that pool (retakaful, reserving, claims operations, the Qard Hasan backstop) holds up in a bad year. UAE takaful economics are brutal, as the consolidation wave proved, and ADNTC is the only operator whose claims-paying strength is attested by two international agencies over a decade. If your first filter is "will they pay a large claim without drama," this is the default answer, and it is why ADNTC grades A- in our Halal Money Index.

The most inventive shelf in the market

ADNTC's product development is where it stops being a boring strength story. Alongside standard motor, home and health lines, it sells covers nobody else in UAE retail insurance publishes, takaful or conventional:

  • War property damage home extension: optional cover for physical loss or damage to UAE residential buildings and contents caused by war, declared or undeclared. Conditions are published (private residential occupancy, reinforced concrete construction, annual aggregate limit with no reinstatement). We found no other UAE retail home product offering this.
  • School fee protection: up to AED 500,000 paid as a lump sum plus annual installments matched to the school fee cycle if the paying parent dies or is disabled. In a country where private schooling is effectively compulsory for expatriates, this is the most thoughtfully localized takaful product on sale. We cover it in depth in our school fee protection guide.
  • Gender-specific critical illness plans (Female Care and Male Care), a wellness-linked health plan (Xen) bundling a Wellx Premium subscription, and even jetski takaful.

Motor and home are competent rather than category-leading: comprehensive and TPL tiers, optional Oman extension, natural perils and windscreen covers, a 15+ garage network that is smaller than mass-market rivals, and up to 20% discounts for Fazaa cardholders.

Governance and the disclosed model

The Internal Shari'a Committee is named: Prof. Dr. Mohammad Abdulrahim Sultan Alolama, Sh. Dr. Ali Husain Aljunaidi and Sh. Dr. Osaid Kailani, supported by Dr. Mohammad Omar heading a dedicated Internal Shari'a Control Division. The takaful mechanics are a disclosed hybrid, and here is the market curiosity: the clearest documentation of ADNTC's own model lives in Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank's key facts statements for the bank-distributed plans, which spell out the Tabarru Fund, the agency fee, and the Mudarabah investment arrangement, and even price the add-ons (personal accident benefit at AED 120 for the driver plus AED 30 per passenger). Bank-grade disclosure through the bancatakaful channel, thinner disclosure direct.

The honest negatives

  • Pricing opacity: base contributions are quote-only on nearly everything. Transparency-first rivals give you more to compare before a phone call.
  • No published wakala fee percentages or participant surplus distribution history, the standard UAE gaps, unfixed even here.
  • A pending arbitration: Aman disputes ADNTC's August 2024 termination of an agreement to acquire Aman's individual life portfolio. It is a commercial dispute about a deal that did not close, not a solvency or compliance question, but it remains unresolved.

Verdict

For buyers who rank claims-paying certainty first, ADNTC is the UAE takaful benchmark, and for a handful of real risks (war damage to your home, your children's school fees surviving your death) it is effectively the only market. The tax you pay is informational: collect its quote, then make it disclose the fee clause and the disability definitions in writing. Compare it against Salama for heritage and product breadth, and against Sukoon Takaful for published compliance documentation. Facts verified 5 August 2026 against takaful.ae, ADIB key facts statements, rating agency announcements and the CBUAE register.

Frequently asked

Why does the ratings streak matter so much? Because takaful promises are long. A motor policy tests its operator within a year; a family or school-fee plan tests it across a decade. A.M. Best affirming A- for ten consecutive years, with Fitch at A- for four, is the only evidence of that duration quality any UAE takaful operator can show, and it is why we call ADNTC the strength benchmark despite its pricing opacity.

Can I buy without going through a bank? Yes. ADNTC sells direct as well as through Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank, where its plans appear under ADIB branding. The bank channel adds documented key facts statements, useful reading whichever door you enter; the trade-offs of buying at the counter are covered in our bancatakaful guide.

What should I push for in the quote? The contribution, obviously, but also the wakala fee and the mudaraba share on investment returns, both part of ADNTC's disclosed hybrid structure. The company documents the model better than almost anyone; make the salesperson put your plan's numbers on it. The wakala investigation explains what a reasonable answer looks like.

Quick Answer

ADNTC review: a decade of A- ratings, war property cover, school fee protection, and the pricing opacity that comes with UAE takaful's strongest operator.
