Opening a Dubai Islamic Bank account takes a valid Emirates ID, a valid passport, a residence visa if you are an expatriate, proof of income such as a salary certificate or trade licence, proof of address such as a utility bill, and a signed FATCA and CRS declaration, all valid for at least 30 days on the day you apply. New customers can open an Al Islami account digitally through the DIB alt mobile app in minutes; existing customers add accounts through alt online or a branch. There is no minimum salary printed in the account Key Facts Statement, the account can be opened with no balance, and a AED 26.25 monthly fee applies only when your average balance is below AED 3,000.

Which DIB account should you open?

DIB sells five retail accounts to individuals plus a salary package layered on top. The Al Islami Current Account is a Qard Hasan account: your deposit is a benevolent loan to the bank, guaranteed and repayable on demand, and it earns nothing. The Al Islami Savings Account, E-Savings Account and 2-in-1 Account are Mudaraba accounts that share in the bank's investment pool and pay a declared profit each quarter. Shaatir is the children's savings account. The DIB Millionaire Account is a Wakala account that pays an expected 0.05% a year and enters you in monthly draws. DIB XTRA is not a separate account but a salary transfer package with a joining bonus. The Islamic current account comparison sets DIB against other banks; this page is about getting the right DIB account open.

Every figure in that table comes from the account Key Facts Statements dated October 2025 and April 2026 and the accounts schedule of charges, revision 1 of 2025. One inconsistency is worth knowing before you go in: the current account web page describes a AED 3,000 opening balance while the KFS says the account can be opened without any balance. Our full DIB review flagged the same thing. In practice the fee, not the opening deposit, is what the AED 3,000 figure controls.

Documents DIB will ask for, and what gets rejected

The Key Facts Statement for the current, savings, 2-in-1 and Millionaire accounts lists the same set of requirements. You need the account opening application, a Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act and Common Reporting Standard declaration signed at the time of application, a valid Emirates ID, a valid passport, a valid residence visa if you are an expatriate, a source of funds and proof of income document such as a salary certificate or trade licence, and proof of physical residential address such as a utility bill. The KFS then adds the rule that catches people out: all documents must be valid for at least 30 days at the time of application. An Emirates ID or visa expiring in three weeks will be refused until renewed.

  • Check the expiry dates on your Emirates ID, passport and visa and make sure each has 30 days or more to run.
  • Get a salary certificate addressed to Dubai Islamic Bank from your employer, or a trade licence if you are self-employed, as the source of funds document.
  • Find a utility bill or tenancy document showing your current physical address in the UAE.
  • Decide at the start whether you want a debit card and a 25-leaf cheque book, because the KFS says the card is issued only if you ask for it during opening and the cheque book is subject to an Al Etihad Credit Bureau check.
  • If opening for a child, bring the guardian's consent and ID documents as well as the minor's documents.
  • Sign the FATCA and CRS declaration and the KFS acknowledgement; the account KFS states that the cooling-off right is waived for these accounts.

New arrivals without an Emirates ID card yet should know that the KFS lists a valid Emirates ID as a requirement for every account, with no printed exception for the application receipt. The E-Savings and Millionaire accounts accept non-residents, but both still ask for an Emirates ID in the documents list and the E-Savings account requires an existing DIB current, savings or 2-in-1 account. Ask the branch whether an Emirates ID application receipt is accepted before you travel; the published documents do not say so.

Online and app opening versus a branch visit

DIB's alt brand is the digital route. The alt pages say that anyone who does not yet have a DIB account can open a new account in minutes through the DIB alt mobile app, without forms, paperwork or a branch visit, and the Millionaire Account page repeats that new customers become DIB customers through the app or a branch. The current account KFS lists the booking channels as branches, the wealth management centre, the direct sales team, and online or mobile banking for additional accounts only, which reflects the older process; the alt app onboarding sits on top of it for first accounts. The E-Savings Account opens only through online or mobile banking and only for people who already hold an Al Islami account.

A branch is still required for three things. Closing any account must be done in person at a DIB branch with your original identity document, after which linked products are cancelled and the bank runs its checks. The accounts that need source of funds and address evidence may need originals shown at a branch if the app cannot verify them. And joint accounts, which the KFS allows for the current, savings, 2-in-1 and Millionaire accounts, are opened with all holders present. For additional accounts after the first, alt online lets you add a savings, 2-in-1 or E-Savings account without visiting.

Minimum salary: what DIB actually requires

Searches for a DIB minimum salary mostly come from people who have seen the figure on finance pages. The account KFS for the current, savings and 2-in-1 accounts sets no salary requirement at all; eligibility is being a UAE national or legal resident over 18. The salary figures that do exist attach to products built on the account. The DIB XTRA joining bonus tables start at a monthly salary of AED 5,000 to AED 7,999, where a UAE national earns AED 500 for the salary transfer and an expatriate AED 250. The Millionaire Account waives its monthly fee with a salary transfer of AED 5,000 or more and gives a bonus draw entry for a transfer of AED 10,000 or more. Al Islami Auto Finance and Personal Finance start at AED 3,000 a month.

So a zero-balance, zero-salary DIB account is the Al Islami Current Account with the fee accepted, the Shaatir account for a child, or the current account with one of the fee waivers below. The no salary transfer account guide explains how that compares with other banks.

Fees: maintenance, closure, teller and dormancy

The AED 26.25 monthly maintenance fee is charged on the current, savings, 2-in-1 and Millionaire accounts whenever the average monthly balance, calculated from day-end balances, is below AED 3,000. The schedule of charges says it is deducted on the first Sunday of every month. It is waived if you have an active DIB finance facility and the account is the payment account, if you hold an active Wakala or investment deposit and the account is the linked account, or if you are an Aayan or Wajaha priority customer. The Millionaire Account adds a fourth waiver for a monthly salary transfer of AED 5,000 or more. Shaatir has no fee and the E-Savings KFS states no balance requirement.

Dormancy follows the CBUAE pattern. An account is classed as dormant after one year with no customer-initiated transactions, provided your KYC and ID details have also not been updated for a year and you hold no other active products. At three years plus three months from the last transaction, after a notification, the balance moves to the bank's dormant account ledger; at five years it is transferred to the CBUAE's unclaimed balances account after any due charges are deducted. If the bank decides to close your account it must give 60 days' notice, and it can close for non-compliance with its terms or after four or more returned cheques in a year, which also triggers a report to Al Etihad Credit Bureau.

Profit rules on the savings accounts

The savings accounts pay profit declared quarterly on the average monthly balance, but each has gates that turn it into a current account for the month. On the Savings and E-Savings accounts, no profit is paid for any month in which the minimum balance drops below AED 1,000 or in which more than one withdrawal is made by teller or electronic channel. On the 2-in-1 Account the thresholds are AED 10,000 on any day and two withdrawals. The declared rates for Q2 2026 were 0.12% on the Savings Account, 0.20% on E-Savings, 0.15% on the 2-in-1, 0.30% on Shaatir and 0.48% on a one-year investment deposit, with the bank taking 90% of pool profit as Mudarib. The savings account fine print guide explains why those gates matter more than the headline.

Verdict: which DIB account to open for salary, savings and a dependant

For a salary, open the Al Islami Current Account through the alt app and ask for the DIB XTRA package at the same time, because the joining bonus only applies to a new salary relationship started with a new finance or covered card and the bonus is scaled to your salary band from AED 5,000 upwards. Keep the average above AED 3,000 or make it the repayment account for a DIB finance to avoid the AED 26.25 fee. For savings, do not rely on the Al Islami Savings Account's 0.12%; open it only as the base account the E-Savings Account requires, then put the money in E-Savings at 0.20% or, for a one-year horizon, a one-year investment deposit at 0.48%. Compare that with ADIB's deposit rates before committing.

For a dependant, open Shaatir for a child: no minimum, no fee, the highest declared rate in the AED savings family at 0.30%, and a debit card in the child's name. For a non-resident relative, the Millionaire Account accepts non-residents and minors with guardian consent, but needs AED 15,000 average for a single draw entry and charges the AED 26.25 fee below AED 3,000. Use the bank accounts hub to compare the alternatives and our matching tool if DIB's fee structure does not fit. Facts checked against dib.ae on 12 September 2026.

Frequently asked questions

What documents do I need to open a DIB account?

The DIB Key Facts Statement lists an account opening application, a signed FATCA and CRS declaration, a valid Emirates ID, a valid passport, a valid residence visa for expatriates, proof of income or source of funds such as a salary certificate or trade licence, and proof of physical address such as a utility bill. Every document must be valid for at least 30 days on the day you apply. Minors' accounts also need the guardian's consent and ID.

Can I open a DIB account online?

Yes. DIB's alt mobile app lets someone who has never banked with DIB open a new account in minutes without paperwork or a branch visit, according to the alt pages. Existing customers add savings, 2-in-1 and E-Savings accounts through alt online or the app. The E-Savings Account is online-only and requires an existing DIB account. Closing an account still requires a branch visit with your original ID.

Is there a minimum salary to open a DIB account?

No salary requirement is printed in the Key Facts Statements for the Al Islami Current, Savings or 2-in-1 accounts; the eligibility test is being a UAE national or legal resident over 18. Salary figures attach to add-ons: the DIB XTRA joining bonus tables start at AED 5,000 a month, the Millionaire Account fee waiver needs a AED 5,000 salary transfer, and DIB auto and personal finance start at AED 3,000.

Does DIB have a zero balance account?

Yes, in two senses. The DIB XTRA Salary Transfer Account is described as a zero balance account for salary customers. The Al Islami Current Account KFS also says it can be opened without any balance, but a AED 26.25 monthly fee applies while the average balance is below AED 3,000 unless you have a DIB finance, a Wakala or investment deposit, or priority banking status. Shaatir for children has no minimum and no fee.

How much does it cost to close a DIB account?

AED 26.25 if you close an Al Islami Current, Savings or E-Savings account within six months of opening, according to each Key Facts Statement; after six months there is no closure fee listed. The Millionaire Account can be closed at any time with no early closure fee. Closure must be done at a branch with your original identity document, and any linked cards, cheque books or facilities are cancelled first.

What happens if my DIB account goes dormant?

DIB classes an account as dormant after one year without customer-initiated transactions, if your KYC and ID details are also a year out of date and you have no other active products. The KFS lists no dormancy fee. After three years and three months, following a notification, the balance moves to a dormant account ledger; after five years it goes to the Central Bank of the UAE's unclaimed balances account, less any charges due.
